I was lucky enough to intern in the Nutrition Department within Children’s Cancer Hospital Egypt (57357), in the start of 2020. As a Global Nutrition & Health student, I was already aware how important this was to the longevity and wellbeing. However, my time at 57357 showed me how essential optimal nutrition is in pediatric oncology.

The challenges these children face regarding treatment, side effects and the cancer itself, meant that what they ate had an extreme significance in bettering their clinical outcome. Not only was I able to monitor and treat my own patients, under the supervision and guidance of the incredible team, but I was able to meet with the patients. This gave me a chance to see what an integral role each doctor and specialist has in the treatment process, and how they must work symbiotically in order to ensure the most optimal treatment for the child.

I could not be more grateful for Dr Gulsen Salah and her team for the important knowledge, experiences and memories they have given me, which have lead me to work with Nutrition & Health in the public sector.

For anyone looking to see the impact that an organization can have, in both pediatric and oncological care, or just health promotion in general, I recommend that they consider 57357 as an internship place.
