A microsurgery to remove a rare brain tumor that extended from the base of the skull to the pharynx

A Hospital 57357 surgical team performed a microsurgery to remove a rare tumor in the base of the skull, and extended over an area of 6cm * 5cm from the brainstem to the first and second vertebra of the neck bones, behind the pharynx (Clival chordoma)

The surgery was successfully done for a 13 year old child where the team included Dr. Mohamed Albeltagy, head of neurosurgery department and Dr. Abdel Rahman Younes, ENT professor. The surgery spanned 7 hours during which the entire tumor was removed.

Dr. Albeltagy revealed that this tumor type is one of the most difficult brain tumors because of its location and its adhesion to veins, arteries and vital centers, and that the surgery was performed using the thin endoscope, microsurgical instruments and the navigation device which directs the surgeon during the surgery to avoid complications.
