“The Plant that healed Khaled”

“My plant is 3 years old. Looking at it gives me hope, joy and happiness. Every time I come and see my plant, I see that it has grown just like me!”

“My plant is 3 years old. Looking at it gives me hope, joy and happiness. Every time I come and see my plant, I see that it has grown just like me!” Those were the words of 9-year-old Khaled. Khaled was admitted to 57357 when he was only 6. His first encounter with plants was also his first visit to 57357. “I was doing my regular gardening chores when I saw a little boy standing outside the fence with his mother. He was crying and screaming and it seemed like he was giving her a hard time.

I approached them and asked his mother to give me a few minutes to show him the plants hoping that he would calm down. A few moments later, he was admiring the beautiful garden flowers and he had already forgotten he was sick.” said Mr. Mahmoud, the garden manager. After a few visits, Khaled decided to plant a flower in the hospital garden. Visit after visit, Khaled would run to see Mr. Mahmoud and his plant before doing his treatment and with every visit Khaled’s plant grew older and bloomed more just like him.

Khaled is done with his chemotherapy and once every month he comes with his mother all the way from Alexandria for maintenance doses. His flower has created a beautiful bond between him and the hospital. The kind of bond that gives him hope and optimism that he will become better and grow older just like his plant.
