During this internship, participants will spend a 2-week in the clinical pathology department that covers all the laboratories functions through using the tools of chemistry, microbiology, hematology and molecular pathology.

By the end of this training, participants will be able to:

Microbiology:

  • Conduct a blood culture.
  • Use identification and sensitivity methods.
  • Use manual identification and sensitivity methods.
  • Analyze samples.

Cytogenetic:

  • Gain knowledge about cytogenetics.
  • Apply the process of sampling including karyotyping and FISH.

Flow cytometry:

  • Receive samples properly.
  • Understand how leukemia is diagnosed.
  • Prepare samples.
  • Identify reagents and conditions used.
  • See how to properly use the equipment.

Molecular & Tissue typing:

  • Understand DNA extraction methods.
  • Understand the PCR.
  • Understand HLA (Tissue typing).
  • Understand gel-electrophoresis.

Chemistry:

  • Understand how to deal with samples.
  • Understand how to use Cerner.
  • Know how to use Arterial Blood Gases Equipment and Spectrophotometry.

Virology:

  • Obtain awareness about serology and molecular efficiency including extraction methods, amplification methods, and detection techniques.
  • Understand the virology unit in cancer patients.

Hematology:

  • Check sample validity from the point of withdrawal.
  • Understand what CBC is.
  • Understand what components of the blood pictures are.
  • Understand what are the techniques conducted in CBC.
  • Understand the coagulation profile.
