Medical Internship 2023

Overview
During this two-week internship, participants will gain general knowledge of the various clinical approaches for treating different pediatric malignancies at Children’s Cancer Hospital Egypt 57357. The orientation as well as the training include didactic and experiential activities covering fundamentals and basic knowledge that help to prepare the medical students for their upcoming career in medicine. The students will be a part of our team, which consists of one chief resident, one fellow, and the attending physician.
Learning Objectives
By the end of this workshop participants will be able to:
- Inpatient and outpatient pediatric oncology rotations
• Learn how to gather information (history taking, physical examinations, and vital signs) and proper clinical assessment of all patients in the hematology, solid, BMT and neuro-oncology departments
• Learn and apply basic infection control measures including strict precautions for isolated cases
• Recognize common presenting signs & symptoms.
• Recognize and learn the importance of the electronic medical system in providing medical care including basic investigations and daily notes
• See types of medications given as intravenous fluids, antibiotics, chemotherapeutic drugs, nutrition, and pain management
• Recognize varieties of diagnostic labs and imagining used
• Realize how ethical behavior, respect, patient privacy, and responsiveness to the needs of patients and families are undertaken
• Learn how to communicate with patients/families, colleagues, and other health professionals - Emergency
• Recognize the most common emergency features presented to emergency room and how to deal in a professional way
• Learn how to categorize patients presented to the emergency room according to the severity of the condition using the triage assessment score
• Learn how to screen the suspected cases of infectious disease presented to emergency and patient flow for any suspected cases
• Learn how to apply smooth patient flow in the emergency to make a safe environment for patients and staff
• Gain the role of the clinical pharmacy in emergency and follow the journey of medication from physician order to medication administration for the patient - Procedure room and day care units
• Recognize the workflow and how oncology procedures (lumbar punctures, intrathecal chemotherapy, bone marrow aspirates, and biopsies) are being done
• Learn and apply basic infection control measures utilized in the procedure room and daycare
• Know the workflow and chemotherapy given and medical service provided in the daycare - Radiology rotation
• Types and values of different imaging modalities including X-Ray, ultrasound, CT, and MRI
• Role of imaging in diagnosis, staging, and follow-up of oncology patients - Clinical and surgical pathology rotation
• To gain basic and essential Knowledge of the function of the laboratory in all areas of surgical pathology, laboratory medicine, hematology, microbiology, and virology to understand the role of the lab within the multidisciplinary patient care team
• See and understand the hematoxylin and eosin staining and other essential parts of pathology procedures with a common histologic malignant diagnosis
• See, understand, and learn how to interpret the main laboratory tests used in common practice - Radiation therapy rotation
• Recognize the patient workflow and common indications for radiotherapy in different childhood cancer
• Recognize the main complications of radiotherapy
