  • Hematology & Coagulation, Chemistry, Serology Units
    • Introduction of a complete total lab automation system connecting all instruments for an efficient and effective test results reporting. This system is of great value in eliminating errors, decreasing tests turnaround time as well as decreasing reagents costs.
    • Also, publishing the hematology atlas to be used by all residents, fellows and trainees as well as medical doctors, master and doctoral students from outside the hospital. It is sold for a nominal fee for the benefit of the hospital.
    • In the clinical chemistry lab, the pro calcitonin test has been added to our list since the hospital started treating COVID cases

  • Microbiology Unit
    • The microbiology lab accepts a diversity of patient specimen types (eg, Blood culture, stool samples, respiratory secretions, urine samples, surgical materials etc) for all microbiology panels: aerobic, anaerobic, mycobacteria and fungal cultures & smears. The availability of 24/7 service and timely reporting improved the turn around time greatly. This was of great value in reducing the time needed for initiation of optimal therapies and patient care.
    • The lab recently implemented an identifying methods MALDI-TOF with more than 5000 strains in the data base. Also rapid diagnosis of certain antibiotic resistance pattern (KPC, NDM, VIM, IMP-1, and OXA-48 in 48 minutes ) directly from blood cultures was applied using full automated multiplex PCR tools( Xpert Carba-R test & BioFire BCID2 Panel).
    • The mycobacteria diagnostics was enhanced by introducing Xpert MTB/RIF assay nucleic acid amplification test for the diagnosis of tuberculosis and rapid detection of RIF resistance in clinical specimens. This is in addition to the routine ZN staining and mycobacteria culture. The QuantiFERON-TB Gold (QFT) also was applied recently commonly known as an IGRA, and is a modern alternative to the tuberculin skin test.
    • Diagnosis of infectious causes of diarrhea was added by Xpert C. difficile toxin detection in 45 Minutes, this includes. difficile binary toxin (CDT), as well as toxin A/B and differentiate C. difficile presumptive 027/NAP1/BI.

  • Virology Unit
    • Acquaintance with quality procedures for tracking samples and results for best performance including; sharing Helix upgrade for molecular virology tests and proficiency test program from CAP.
    • Revisited our test lists with addition of new test as mandated by clinical conditions of patients in agreement with hospital clinicians e.g IL 2R, IL 6, IL 8, TNF, reg 3, HGF, PI3, Anti-CCP, anti-thyroglobulin, anti-thyroperoxidase antibodies, Human C5b9, Fecal calprotectin.
    • Newly introduced molecular tests, real-time PCR for common viruses and emerging ones; Measles real time PCR, JC virus realtime-PCR, Pneumocyctis jirovecii realtime PCR, BioFire FilmArray panels; Diarrhea, Meningitis, Respiratory & Pneumonia, Familial Mediteranian Fever real time PCR (12 mutations), Human herpes 7,8 virus real time PCR, Varicella zoster virus real time PCR.
    • Introduction of Euroline fully automated blotting instrument for testing of food intolerance against 216 food types, food allergy panels and panels for different autoimmune diseases.
    • Testing Panel for SARS CoV-2 (COVID-19), including; SARS CoV-2 real-time PCR, SARS CoV-2 antigen test, SARS CoV-2 antibodies either rapid IgG/IgM or semi quantitative total and specific anti-spike antibodies.

  • Flow Cytometer Unit
    • We have updated work by adding to the already present 6 colors flowcytometer from coulter one 10 colors from BD, one 10 colors instruments from Coulter to coup with increased workload.
    • The workload include immunophenotyping and DNA analysis, for Leukemia and Lymphoma, CD34 counting and donor lymphocyte for bone marrow transplantation, Lymphocyte subsets and detection of immunodeficiency, Paroxysmal Nocturnal Hemoglobinuria (PNH), body fluid like ( CSF and pleural fluid) infiltration by malignant cells, MRD detection of acute leukemia with high sensitivity & specificity.

  • Cytogenetic Unit
    • The Cytogenetics Lab offers an analysis and clinical interpretation service on a wide spectrum of diagnostic testings for patients with hematological malignancies using conventional karyotype, fluorescence in situ hybridization (FISH) and next generation sequencing (NGS).
    • We also provide genomic testing for hereditary predisposition to cancer as well as constitutional rare diseases.
    • We commit to high quality standards by participating in relevant external quality assessment programs (CAP).
