Researchers from the Proteomics and Metabolomics research team at CCHE 57357 used the advanced technology of high resolution mass spectrometry and an integrated approach of analytical and statistical methods to obtain a deep and more comprehensive insight into the biology of COVID-19 infection.

Dr. Sameh Magdeldin, Head of the Proteomics and Metabolomics Research Program, sheds light on the significance of the study:

After 3 years of spread of the COVID-19 virus, scientists were still not able to fully understand the development and reasons for severity the disease in infected patients. The use of single approach to study samples from infected COVID-19 gives an incomplete picture of the properties and development pathways of the disease, which also hinders the development of an effective treatment or diagnosis.

This is why this study integrated more than one approach to study both the proteome and metabolome of COVID-19 infected patients, which is in manner studying the patient on two biological levels. As such, when also combining these analyses with a statistical-based technique, we were able to reach a more comprehensive and in-depth understanding of the disease and its development pathways.  This gives insight and paves the way to reaching more effective ways of treatment and management of COVID-19 patient with severe infections.
